What goes into panelling

    Setting it out

    Good panelling starts on paper. The panels are spaced so they come out even at both ends of the wall and sit right around sockets, switches and window sills.

  2. 02

    On the stairs

    Up a stairwell the panels follow the line of the stairs, so every frame is cut to the same angle. It is slower than a flat wall, and it shows when it is done right.

  3. 03

    The material

    MDF is the usual choice: stable, smooth and easy to paint. Moisture-resistant MDF is the one for bathrooms and utility rooms.

  4. 04

    Ready for paint

    Joints are filled, nail holes stopped, and the edges sanded and sealed, so the paint goes on clean.
