The job

What goes into a media wall

  1. 01

    Measuring the wall

Every wall is different: the width, the height to the ceiling, the chimney breast, where the sockets and the aerial point are. The design starts from those measurements, not from a standard size.

  2. 02

    The frame

A media wall is usually a timber stud frame fixed to the wall and floor, then sheeted. The frame is where the strength is, because it has to carry a wall-mounted TV and loaded shelves.

  3. 03

    Cables, before it closes up

Cables for the TV, the box and any lights are run inside the wall before it is sheeted, so nothing hangs down. New sockets and wiring are a job for an electrician.

  4. 04

    Fire, shelves and doors

An electric fire needs a recess of the right size with room for air around it, as its maker sets out. Shelves and cupboard doors go in next, then everything is filled and sanded ready for paint.
