   Hanging a new door

   The door is cut to suit the frame, the hinges let in, and the latch and handle fitted, so it swings clear and closes on its catch without rattling.

   Doors that stick

   Houses move and timber swells. Most sticking doors can be planed, rehung or have the hinges adjusted rather than being replaced.

   Frames and architrave

   A frame split around the lock, a lining that has moved, tired architrave: these can be repaired or replaced on their own.

   Front doors

   A timber front door that has dropped on its hinges, binds in damp weather or will not lock properly usually needs adjusting, not replacing.
