The job

The carpentry in a bathroom renovation

  1. 01

Strip out, then check the floor

Once the old suite is out, the floorboards and joists get checked. Soft boards around a toilet or bath are common, and they are replaced before anything new goes on top.

  2. 02

    Walls and boxing-in

Stud walls for a new layout or a shower area, and boxing to hide pipes, are framed and sheeted in boards made for wet areas.

  3. 03

    A solid base for tiles

Tiles crack when the floor or wall under them moves. A stiff floor and the right backer board are what stop that.

  4. 04

    The finish

Bath panels, vanity units, shelving, the door and the skirting go in at the end, once the tiling and plumbing are done.
