The job
What fitting a floor involves
- 01
The base comes first
A floor is only as flat as what is under it. Loose boards are screwed down, low spots levelled and squeaks sorted before the new floor goes down.
- 02
Letting wood settle
Wood moves with heat and moisture. Solid and engineered boards are left in the room before fitting, for as long as the maker says.
- 03
A gap at the walls
A floating floor needs a small gap at every wall, hidden under the skirting or a trim. Without it the floor can lift in summer.
- 04
Doors and thresholds
Doors are trimmed to clear the new floor, and a threshold goes in where it meets another floor.
